The Uncut Gems Podcast - Episode 162 (Mo’ Better Blues)

The Uncut Gems Podcast

The Uncut Gems Podcast is a show where a bunch of like-minded individuals gather around a virtual table to discuss films that for one reason or another have become forgotten. Tongues pressed firmly in cheek, the team don their film historian top hats and rant from sedentary positions to hopefully conclude whether the film in question deserves to be covered by sands of time or if it is a classic in dire need of attention.

In this episode of the show, making our monthly stop at the Spike Lee Station to talk about his fourth feature, Mo' Better Blues. Joined by our two great buddies, Jak and Carson, we dig into this dense movie to find out whether it should be faulted for its archetypal storytelling or applauded for its symbolic richness. We also talk about Lee's place in the pantheon of filmmakers at the time of its release, his potential anguish at the state of Hollywood, the problem with the film's bookends, its many controversies and more!
