The Uncut Gems Podcast - Episode 167 (Jungle Fever)

The Uncut Gems Podcast

The Uncut Gems Podcast is a show where a bunch of like-minded individuals gather around a virtual table to discuss films that for one reason or another have become forgotten. Tongues pressed firmly in cheek, the team don their film historian top hats and rant from sedentary positions to hopefully conclude whether the film in question deserves to be covered by sands of time or if it is a classic in dire need of attention.

In this episode of the show, we are talking about Spike Lee's Jungle Fever, a dense societal diorama that begins with a premise of an elevated screwball rom-com and descends into deep and heavy thematic deliberations on race, relationships, drugs and familial sins. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about Spike Lee finding his footing as a cinematic preacher, workplace racism, Wesley Snipes and Annabella Sciorra owning the screen, and Samuel L. Jackson spreading his wings. We also talk about how men and women talk about their sexual relationships differently, the NYPD response time being incredibly quick when it is convenient, and how many people can one reasonably expect to dwell in a single crack house.
