The Uncut Gems Podcast - Episode 55 (Somewhere)

The Uncut Gems Podcast

The Uncut Gems Podcast is a show where a bunch of like-minded individuals gather around a virtual table to discuss films that for one reason or another have become forgotten. Tongues pressed firmly in cheek, the team don their film historian top hats and rant from sedentary positions to hopefully conclude whether the film in question deserves to be covered by sands of time or if it is a classic in dire need of attention.

In this episode of the show we are discussing Sofia Coppola's Somewhere, arguably her most underrated directorial outing. Over the course of our sprawling, deep and layered conversation we comment on the criticism levelled at Coppola every time she makes a movie, her innate talent to show and not tell, and her ability to draw from her own life experiences in an incredibly relatable manner among other things. We also give some much needed attention to the way Somewhere handles the themes of celebrity, fatherhood and loneliness to craft one of the most interesting stories Coppola ever tackled.
